about

aka: Meditations for Piano and Loudspeaker

Recorded in the early days of pandemic-isolation, this work explores the minimal range of piano performance when electronic sound meets and engulfs the piano's sound board.

In Fm refers to frequency modulation, a phenomenon that informs both the transmission of signals via radio as well as a form of synthesis pioneered by John Chowning and adopted by Yamaha for its famous line of DX synthesizers and beyond (one of which is the TG77 used on this record).

The possibilities afforded by frequency modulation allowed me to find timbres that blended with the piano. This was achieved by pointing a single speaker at the sound board and looking for a balance between the delicate upright piano and the electronic sound. By mic-ing it in stereo on the performer side of the piano, I felt that the the electronic sound took on the character of the air around it, the room, and what I was feeling. This feeling informed how I should play the piano, resulting in minimal phrasing to gently push the flow of sound.

The session took place at a time when the world was very quiet (the early days of the pandemic), when reflection and musical experimentation evolved into meditation.
